Pergeseran-pergeseran teoretis dalam studi antropologi pada beberapa dekade terakhir telah memberikan cara pengenalan yang diperbaharui dalam memandang isu identitas, yaitu bahwa kehidupan sosial, arena di mana identitas itu bermain, harus secara fundamental dipahami sebagai penegosiasian makna-makna (meanings). Di sinilah posisi pendekatan interpretatif Clifford Geertz menjadi penting sekaligus problematik.Penting karena Geertz, menawarkan pendekatan humanis yang melihat bagaimana makna dan simbol itu menjadi penting dalam pandangan masyarakat itu sendiri. Karena itu menurutnya, interpretasi budaya membutuhkan analisis yang lebih mendalam, cerdas dan kompleks, yang mana maksud-maksud, bentuk-bentuk budaya yang kompleks itu tidak bisa begitu saja direduksi kepada efek-efeknya terhadap mesin dan organisme sosial seperti yang dikatakan oleh para sarjana strukturalis dan fungsionalis sebelum dia. Pada saat yang bersamaan ia juga problematik karena, posisi Geertz yang mencari makna membuat dia seperti mengabaikan atau meremehkan proses dalam hal bagaimana interaksi?arena di mana makna bekerja, itu diproduksi? Dalam hal ini, para pengkritiknya telah ?membantu? Geertz dengan mengingatkan akan apa yang disebut power relations.Penelitian ini, dengan menggunakan analisis kekuasaan, di dalam discourse-discourse yang berkembang di antara bukan hanya masing-masing kelompok ke-Islaman?salafî di antaranya, tetapi juga aktor-aktor sosial lainnya yang memiliki kepentingan berbeda-beda, akan terjadi negosiasi-negosiasi yang masing-masingnya berangkat dari posisi kekuasaan yang berbeda. Melalui hubungan-hubungan kekuasaan inilah interaksi itu diproduksi, yang nantinya akan membentuk konstruksi makna tentang identitas.Oleh karena itu, penulis menawarkan metode lain dalam memahami identitas, yaitu melalui konsep ?agency.? Melalui agency, ada cara untuk melihat perdebatan ini dari sisi pertengahan. Sisi yang bukan untuk menghilangkan signifikansi pengaruh Geertz dan juga bukan untuk mengabaikan signifikansi argumen pengkritiknya, namun menjembatani antara keduanya (meaning dan power relations). Upaya menjembatani teori ini melalui konsep agency, dengan begitu akan mencakup signifikansi salah satu pihak dan sekaligus memperbaiki insignifikansinya melalui kritik pihak yang lainnya, dan begitu juga sebaliknya.The on-going theoretical shift in anthropology?s approaches in the last few decades has give somewhat a newly identifying methods in approaching the issue of identity, which is that the social life, arenas in which identity plays, must fundamentally understood as a negotiation of meanings. Here?s where Geertz?s interpretative approach became important and problematic in the same time.

Important because Geertz provides the so-called humanistic point of view that sees meanings and symbols became so much important in their own subjectivity. That being said, Geertz thinks that the cultural interpretations needs a more deep, clever, complexs analysis, where these particular complexs culture and intentions can not reduces into mere it?s effects to social machine and organism like what the structuralists, functionalists used to say before him. In the mean time, it?s also problematic because, Geertz position in search of meanings somehow makes him diminished the process in which how social interactions?arenas where meanings works, being reproduced. In this particular acpects, ?the Power scholars? critiques of Geertz helps to reminds Geertz himself (and eventually, us of course, the wider spectator of the debates) with the so-called ?power relations.?

That?s why through this research, author wants to provide a different methods in order to build a better understanding on the concept of identity, using the concept of ?agency.? With agency, there?s way to see this debates in a more middle, moderat view. View in which we?re not going to eliminate the Geertz significant impact, and at the same time, we?re also have the chance to make use of Geertzian critiques in a more broader, yet sharper context. This is also means that with agency, we?re able to embrace Geertzian significanties in a way, and fix their insignificanties through other?s critique in another way, and vice versa.

I have long been interested in the question of how people sustain a culturally meaningful life in situations of large-scale domination by powerful others. This ia a central theme for this research, where I discussed the ways in which Salafîs, despite having been greatly affect by centuries of intimate involvement in the ever-present debates about the co-called true representations of Islam?through discourses, nonetheless retain arenas of culturally ?authentic? life. By this I mean not that those arenas are untouched by the massive presence of ever-present theological-ideological debates between these various sects, but simply that they are shaped less by these sects encounter and more by the Salafîs? own social and political relations, and by their own culturally constituted intentions, desires, and projects. By quoting Ortner, we may shorthand this idea as a cultural life, or in a smaller contexts, an identity formation, ?on the margins of power.?
