Tesis ini merupakan penelitian tentang adaptasi male-gaze terhadap film Ringu dan Ringu 2 produksi Jepang oleh The Ring dan The Ring 2 produksi Hollywood. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menunjukkan perbedaan representasi male-gaze penonton terhadap karakter perempuan dalam film pada kedua produksi film tersebut. Perbedaan tersebut akan dianalisa dengan memperbandingkan mise en scene dan teknik pengambilan gambar oleh Jepang dan Hollywood. Analisa akan dilandasi oleh pemikiran Laura Mulvey tentang male-gaze pada sinema dalam artikelnya, Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema. Melalui analisis teks, penelitian ini bertujuan untuk membaca adaptasi budaya yang dilakukan Hollywood dalam proses remake film horor Jepang. Dari penelitian ini, terlihat perbedaan bentuk dominasi laki-laki terhadap tokoh perempuan dalam film-film tersebut.

This thesis is a study about the adaptation of male-gaze by The Ring and The Ring 2 produced by Hollywood toward Ringu and Ringu 2 produced by Japan. This study aims to show the representation differences of the audiences? male-gaze toward the female characters of both film productions. Those differences would be analyzed by comparing the mise en scene and camera technique by Japan and Hollywood. The analysis would be based one Laura Mulvey?s theory about male-gaze and cinema written in her journal, Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema. Through the text analysis, the result of this study would show how to read the culture adaptation by Hollywood through the remake process of Japanese horror film. From this analysis, the differences of male domination toward the female characters in those films could be seen.
