Skripsi ini membahas perubahan sumo ritual menjadi olaheaga populer Jepang dengan menggunakan metode analisis deskriptif. Teori yang digunakan adalah teori Leslie White tentang perubahan budaya dan Jay Coakley tentang olahraga. Analisis dari penelitian ini menyimpulkan bahwa perkembangan sosial, politik, dan ekonomi mempengaruhi perubahan sumo ritual menjadi olahraga populer.

AbstractSport is a form of culture. One of the sports in Japan is sumo. Sumo comes from a ritual in the Shinto religion. This thesis discusses the change in ritual sumo into a popular sport in Japan, using the analytic descriptive method, and theories by Leslie White about the change of culture, and from Jay Coakley about sport. The analysis of this study concludes that the development of social, politic, and economy has influenced the change of ritual sumo into a popular sport.
