Tesis ini merupakan rekonstruksi terhadap peran kiai dalam menghadapi suatu ujian yang sulit, yaitu mengenai kemampuan otoritas kiai saat berhadapan dengan kekuatan perubahan yang besar, mulai dari sistem pemerintahan hingga sektor ekonomi masyarakat. Tesis ini bermaksud untuk menganalisa ulang titik tekan konsep peran kiai sebagai ?makelar budaya? dalam periode kekinian. Berdasarkan analisa terhadap beberapa sumber informasi, ditemukan pola-pola adaptasi peran kiai yang menggambarkan perannya sebagai seorang pemilik otoritas di bidang agama sekaligus politik. Dari rangkaian analisa tersebut, akhirnya ditemukan satu kesimpulanmengenai penyempitan otoritas kiai dalam bidang politik terkait dengan perannya sebagai?makelar budaya?

The focus of this thesis is the reconstruction of kiai?s role to face a big challenge, that is about the ability of his authority to face up to a huge power of change, starting from the change of governmental system to economic society sector. The aim of this thesis is to reanalyze the emphasize of the kiai?s role as a ?cultural broker? in nowadays. Based on the analysis from several source of information, was found the adaptation forms of kiai?s role that describing his role as the owner of religion and political authority. From the analysis combination, finally found a conclusion about the tight squeeze of kiai?s authority in politic, related to his role as a ?cultural broker?.
