Adanya pembuatan asam 12-hidroksistearat dapat meningkatkan daya guna minyak jarak. Melalui pembuatan asam 12-hidroksistearat, minyak jarak dapat digunakan menjadi berbagai produk seperti sebagai thickener pada gemuk lumas. Penelitian ini dilakukan untuk mendapatkan kondisi optimum pembuatan asam 12-hidroksistearat pada tekanan atmosferik dan temperatur 1300C, serta memperoleh produk yang sesuai dengan karakteristik asam 12-hidroksistearat komersil.Berdasarkan variasi waktu hidrogenasi dari 1-5 jam, diketahui bahwa hasil terbaik diperoleh pada hidrogenasi 5 jam dengan penurunan bilangan iod sebesar 6,5 dan kenaikan titik lebur sebesar 780C. Produk komersil asam 12-hidroksistearat sedikit lebih unggul dengan penurunan bilangan iod sebesar 4,8 dan kenaikan titik lebur sebesar 78,8°C.

The presence of synthesis 12-hidroxystearic acid can increasing the usability of castor oil. Through the synthesis 12-hydroxystearic acid, castor oil can be used in various product such as lubricating grease thickener. This study was conducted to obtain the optimum conditions for synthesis 12-hidroxystearic acid atatmospheric pressure and temperature 130°C, also to obtain the product that similar with characteristic 12-hidroxystearic acid commercial.Based on the time variation of the hydrogenation of 1-5 hours, it is known that the best condition obtained in the hydrogenation of 5-hour reduction in the amount of iodine is 6.5 and increases the melting point of 780C. Commercial Products 12-hidroxystearic acid has a slightly superior to the decrease in iodine number of 4.8 and increases the melting point of 78.8°C.
