Film adalah sebuah media yang kerap dikaji dalam analisa tekstual dan visual. Penelitian ini membahas film (500) Days of Summer melalui ranah feminisme. Pola penokohan kedua tokoh utama, Tom dan Summer, yang berbeda dari pola konstruksi gender konvensional memicu penulis untuk melihat serta mengkritisi ideologi gender yang terbentuk dalam film. Skripsi ini juga melihat posisi yang sebenarnya dari film dan akan menjawab pertanyaan yang paling mendasar yaitu apakah (500) Days of Summer tergolong sebagai sebuah film feminis atau sebaliknya justru terbawa oleh bias patriarki. Terdapat kecurigaan adanya dualisme dalam cerita, baik melalui penokohan Tom dan Summer maupun ideologi yang terbentuk dalam film ini sendiri. Adanya narator (voice over) yang turut memberi nada ironi memunculkan bias dalam cerita. Dengan membagi penelitian menjadi dua bagian besar dalam melihat oposisi biner dan posisi subjek – objek yang diaplikasikan dalam cerita dan penokohan, maka akan terlihat struktur penokohan dan ideologi gender yang ditawarkan oleh film. Penulis menggunakan oposisi biner yang diteorikan oleh Anderson (1995) dan posisi 'the Self' dan 'the Other' yang ditawarkan oleh de Beauvoir (1949) serta beberapa teori feminis lainnya yang mendukung penelitian ini. Pada akhirnya, film menggugat pola konstruksi gender yang telah terinternalisasi dalam struktur masyarakat konservatif.

Movie is a media that is often studied in a textual and visual analysis. This research analyzes the movie (500) Days of Summer through feminism approach. The characterization of the two major characters, Tom and Summer, which is different from the conventional gender construction drives the writer to see and criticize the gender ideology formed in the movie. This research objectives are to argue the film position and answers the basic questions; is (500) Days of Summer a feminist movie or does it bring the perspective of the patriarchy ideology? There is an assumption that the movie brings the dualistic idea, both in Tom and Summer characterization and the main ideology which are established in the movie. The narrator’s (voice over) irony tone also gives a bias interpretation in the story. By dividing this research into two big parts in seeing the binary opposition and subject – object position which are applied in the story and the characterization of the two major characters, the research is to see the characterization structure and gender ideology that lie in the movie. The writer uses the binary opposition which is theorized by Anderson (1995) and ‘the Self’ and ‘the Other’ hierarchy position which is offered by de Beauvoir (1949), and also another feminist theories that help this research done. In the end, this research is to argue that the movie criticizes the gender construction pattern which has been internalized in conservative society structure.
