Perkembangan zaman telah mengubah nilai dan fungsi kawat gigi atau behel sebagai alat bantu kesehatan menjadi simbol status di masyarakat perkotaan. Munculnya tren behel diiringi oleh adanya keinginan dan kemampuan pasar untuk menciptakan produk instan dari behel, yaitu behel fashion. Studi ini ingin melihat bagaimana pergeseran nilai dan fungsi behel melalui pemaknaan orang yang menggunakan behel fashion dan dampaknya terhadap diri mereka. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah kualitatif dengan bantuan survei karakteristik sosial. Temuan penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa pengguna behel fashion memaknai behel sebagai simbol status ekonomi, status sosial, dan aksesori yang menunjang penampilan. Terdapat tiga dampak dalam diri pengguna behel fashion, yaitu dampak kesehatan, dampak psikologis, dan dampak sosial. Dampak psikologis berupa peningkatan rasa percaya diri dan dampak sosial yaitu penerimaan di lingkungan pergaulan ternyata berbanding terbalik dengan dampak buruk yang terjadi pada kesehatan gigi dan mulut mereka yang menunjukkan bahwa pengguna behel fashion lebih mementingkan status sosial dibandingkan status kesehatan.

The times have changed the value and function of braces that used to be as a health aid to be a symbol of status in urban communities. The emergence of this trend is accompanied by the desire and ability of the market to create instant products from braces, which is fashion braces. The aim of the study is to see the shifts in value and function through people's interpretation who wear fashion braces and its impact on them. The method used in this research is qualitative with the help of the social characteristics survey.

The result of this study indicates that fashion braces users interpret braces as a symbol of economic status, social status, and accessories that support their appearances. There are three impacts within the fashion braces users: health, psychological, and social impacts. Psychologically, the impact is in the increasing of self-confidence and socially, the impact is in the acceptance in the social environment which apparently inversely related to adverse impact in their oral health. This indicates that fashion braces users are more concerned with their social status than their health.
