Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menyelidiki pengaruh diversifikasi produk sebagai salah satu strategi bisnis terhadap tingkat penggunaan hutang perusahaan serta dampak kepemilikan keluarga atas pengaruh diversifikasi produk terhadap tingkat penggunaan hutang. Penelitian ini secara khusus akan meneliti pengaruh diversifikasi produk terhadap tingkat penggunaan hutang dari sudut pandang agency theory. Pada penelitian ini menggunakan sampel penelitian dari perusahaan manufaktur yang terdaftar di Bursa Efek antara tahun 2008-2009 dengan Menggunakan metode least square. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa pemegang saham pengendali keluarga akan lebih mendorong perusahaan untuk menggunakan ekuitas sebagai sumber pendanaan ketika melakukan strategi diversifikasi baik untuk related maupun unrelated diversification.

The purpose of this research is to examine the effect of product diversification on corporate leverage dan the effect of family ownership to the influence of product diversification on corporate leverage ratio. The sample of this research is manufacturing company that listed on the stock market between year 2008-2009 with least square regression method. This research specially trying to give a prove about the effect of diversfication to leverage from the agency theory persperctive. The result of this research find that family ultimate ownership will effect the firm capital structure and will choose equity funding when doing diversification strategy in both related dan unrelated diversification.
