Makalah ini mengangkat puisi karya Sylvia Plath untuk menganalisa bagaimana ideologi gender bekerja dalam puisinya dalam hal memposisikan tokoh laki-laki dan perempuan. Konsep the Self and the Other Simone de Beauvoir merupakan teori utama yang digunakan. Beberapa hal yang menjadi pertanyaan di antaranya: 1) dengan cara apa Plath sebagai the Other menggambarkan dan memposisikan tokoh laki-laki dalam puisinya?; 2) apakah image the Self melemah atau menguat?; dan 3) apakah hal tersebut membuat the Other terlihat lebih inferior daripada the Self? Ada empat temuan utama dari hasil analisis. Pertama, image the Self atau image tokoh laki-laki menguat dalam beberapa aspek. Akibatnya, the Other terlihat lebih inferior. Terdapat pula oposisi biner dalam memposisikan the Self, sementara itu the Other terkadang disuguhkan secara paradoksikal. Kesimpulannya, ideologi gender yang bekerja dalam puisi-puisi karya Sylvia Plath dapat dilihat sebagai keberlangsungan superioritas laki-laki, karena hampir semua tokoh the Self diposisikan lebih tinggi daripada the Other. Meskipun demikian, dengan menyuguhkan tokoh the Other secara paradoksikal dan menunjukkan oposisi biner dalam menghadirkan tokoh the Self, Plath pada saat yang bersamaan melakukan resistesnsi terhadap superioritas laki-laki.

This paper carries the works of Sylvia Plath to analyze how gender ideology works in her poetry in terms of positioning male and female characters. Simone de Beauvoir’s concept of the Self and the Other becomes the main theory used. Some problems need to be answered are: 1) in what way Plath as the Other portrays and positions male characters through her poetry, 2) whether the Self image is strengthened or weakened and 3) whether or not it makes the Other appear more inferior than the Self. There are four key findings of the analysis. First, the Self image or the image of male characters in Plath’s poems is strengthened in some ways. As a result, the Other counterpart looks more inferior to the Self. There are also binary oppositions in positioning the Self characters, while ‘the Other’ ones are sometimes presented paradoxically. In conclusion, the gender ideology working on Sylvia Plath’s poetry can be seen as the perpetuation of male superiority, for most Self characters are positioned higher than the Other ones. However, by paradoxically presenting the Other characters and performing binary oppositions in portraying the Self ones, Plath at the same time presents resistance to male’s superiority.
