ABSTRACTDevelopment of zirconium alloy as biomaterial produced with powder
metallurgy method is observed from the effect of 1%, 3%, 6% and 9%
molybdenum addition on density and porosity, microstructure, Rockwell C
hardness and bioactivity properties with simulated body fluid (SBF). The result of
density and porosity testing shows the increasing molybdenum content can
produce more porosity on alloys. That caused by the addition of molybdenum
would decrease coefficient of diffusivity in zirconium alloys. Microstructure
formed predominantly α-Zr phase and Mo2Zr. But along with the addition of
molybdenum, will form γ-Mo phase which is the molybdenum powders did not
diffuse into β-Zr on sintering process. Hardness on addition of molybdenum
varies between 42 HRC to 45 HRC, which in the lowest achieved by 3% Mo with
42,12 HRC and the highest achieved by 6% Mo with 45,08 HRC. That in
influenced by the amount of porosity and Mo2Zr phase in the alloys. Bioactivity
properties in zirconium alloy will decrease along with the addition of
molybdenum, which caused the formation of γ-Mo phase on the microstructure.
