Masyarakat Gayo memiliki sebuah tradisi nyanyian rakyat (folksong) yang disebut Didong. Didong adalah seni yang dipertandingkan antara dua kumpulan atau grup dari komunitas yang berbeda. Didong sebagai sastra lisan masih bertahan dan menjadi unsur identitas pengenal etnik Gayo hingga saat ini. Didong terbentuk dari konfigurasi antara ekspresi seni sastra, seni suara, dan seni tari dari hasil olah pikir dan rasa. Dalam pertunjukkan Didong terdapat prinsip kelisanan yang dapat ditemukan: karya terjadi hanya pada saat pertunjukan berlangsung; penciptaan karya yang bersifat spontan, isinya dinamis, tetapi memiliki formula tertentu. Formula Didong: menguasai pengetahuan tentang adat-istiadat; tata bunyi lirik Didong, khususnya pada rima akhir. Makalah ini menjelaskan struktur permainan Didong dan bagaimana fungsi Didong dalam masyarakat Gayo.

Gayo people has a folksong which is called by Didong. Didong is an art which compete two groups from the different communities. Didong is still remain and be the identity of Gayo ethnic till now. Didong is formed from the configuration between art of literature, art of voice, and art of dance which are a result of mind and taste processing. In the show of Didong, there are a principal of orality which can be found, such as work can be happen when the show is on going, the spontanous work with a dinamic essential, but has a definite formulas. The formulas of Didong are master of costums and traditions; sound order of Didong's lyrics, especially in the last rhyme. This paper will explain about the structure of Didong show and the functions of it in the Gayo ethnic.
