ABSTRAKDalam lingkup rumah tangga-mikro, orang tua memegang peran penting
dalam menentukan kualitas anak. Teori klasik Becker dan Lewis (1974)
membuktikan keterbatasan pendapatan dalam rumah tangga membuat orang tua
menghadapi trade-off antara jumlah anak dan kualitas anak. Studi ini bertujuan
melakukan pengujian teori Becker secara empiris di Indonesia. Menggunakan data
IFLS4 dan metode OLS, ditemukan hubungan positif antara jumlah anak dan lama
sekolah. Hal ini mengindikasikan tidak terdapat trade-off antara kuantitas dan
kualitas anak usia 7-24. Selanjutnya, variabel tingkat pencapaian pendidikan juga
digunakan dalam uji ini sebagai pendekatan kualitas pendidikan lainnya.
Menggunakan metode order logit, hasil pengujiannya mendukung temuan
sebelumnya yaitu tidak terdapat trade-off antara jumlah anak dan tingkat
pencapaian pendidikan anak.
ABSTRACTParents play an important role in determining the quality of children at
home production. Classical theory of Becker and Lewis (1974) had proven that
there is trade-off between quantity and quality of children because of their low
income parents. This study aim for testing the Becker’s theory empirically in
Indonesia by using the data IFLS 4 and OLS method. It is found that there is a
positive relationship between number of children and years of schooling. This
study indicates that there is no trade-off between quantity and quality of children
ages 7-24. Furthermore, educational attainment level is also tested as an approach
another education quality. By using order logit method, the test results support
previous findings that could not find trade-off between number of children and
level of educational attainment of children in Indonesia.
