Skripsi ini melihat bagaimana proses adaptasi yang dilalui novel The Godfather (1969) ke dalam film The Godfather (1972, 1974) menyebabkan perubahan ideologi yang didasarkan pada analisis hubungan Kay Adams dengan keluarga Corleone. Latar belakang novel sebagai fiksi Italia-Amerika dan pengaruh industri Hollywood pada tahun 1960-1970an terhadap perbedaan-perbedaan yang muncul dalam kedua wahana akan dianalisa. Adapun ideologi yang diamati pada tiap wahana berkenaan dengan isu gender dan interaksi lintas-budaya. Pendekatan yang digunakan dalam skripsi ini adalah teori adaptasi/alih-wahana, konsep stereotipe, konsep gender dan konsep interaksi lintas-budaya. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menunjukkan perbedaan ideologi yang disampaikan oleh masing-masing wahana berkenaan dengan permasalahan interaksi lintas-budaya dan isu gender yang muncul dalam The Godfather.Analisa hubungan karakter penting dilakukan karena Kay Adams dan keluarga Corleone merepresentasikan kelompok budaya white Anglo-Saxon Protestant atau WASP dan mafia Italia/Sisilia. Dengan ditemukannya perbedaanperbedaan tersebut, dapat terlihat bahwa novel The Godfather (1969) menunjukkan perspektif budaya imigran Italia/Sisilia yang terbuka pada interaksi lintas-budaya, sedangkan film The Godfather (1972, 1974) lebih dipengaruhi budaya WASP yang melihat budaya imigran Italia/Sisilia secara stereotipikal sebagai budaya "Yang Lain".

This undergraduate thesis examines how the process of adaptation undergone by The Godfather novel (1969) into The Godfather movies (1972, 1974) caused a shift in its ideology based on the analysis of the relationship between Kay Adams and the Corleone family. The novel's background as Italian-American fiction and the influence of Hollywood industry in the 1960s and 1970s to the differences in both media will be analyzed. The observed ideology is regarding cross-cultural interaction and gender construction issues.The approaches which are used in this thesis are the theory of adaptation, the concept of stereotype, the concept of gender and the concept of cross-cultural interaction. This research aims at determining each media's ideology regarding the cross-cultural interaction and gender issue occurred in The Godfather.Analyzing the relationship between characters is necessary because of the cultures represented by Kay Adams and the Corleone family, which are white Anglo-Saxon Protestant or WASP and Italian/Sicilian mafia. The difference of the development of their relationship indicates that The Godfather (1969) novel uses the perspective of Italian/Sicilian immigrant culture which welcomes cross-cultural interaction, whereas The Godfather (1972, 1974) movies are more influenced by WASP culture's perspective which stereotypically perceives the Italian/Sicilian immigrant culture as "the Other".
