[ABSTRAK
Tesis ini membahas mengenai pers Islam khusunya mengangkat tentang PedomanMasjarakat. Majalah tersebut terbit di Medan pada tahun 1935-1942. Hasilpenelitian ini menyimpulkan bahwa Pedoman Masjarakat merupakan peloporpembaruan pers Islam di Indonesia. Kepeloporan Pedoman Masjarakat terletakpada kemampuan majalah tersebut berperan sebagai media yang mampumenghadapi ideologi-ideologi yang tidak hanya ideologi Islam. PedomanMasjarakat berusaha memberikan alternatif bacaan kepada masyarakat yangsedang terjebak dalam dua konfrontasi antara Islam dan Nasionalis. PedomanMasjarakat hadir sebagai media yang mampu memberikan solusi danmenanamkan pemahaman bahwa antara Islam dan Nasionalisme bukanlah suatuhal yang beseberangan dan tidak untuk dipertentangkan. Majalah ini senantiasamenanamkan bahwa Islam bukanlah agama yang hanya mengatur urusan ritualitaskeagamaan, namun Islam hadir sebagai sebuah agama yang mampu memberikansolusi dalam segala aspek kehidupan seperti sosial, ekonomi dan politik.

This research discusses about Islamic press as specially Pedoman Masjarakat.That magazine published at Medan in 1935-1942. The results conclude thatPedoman Masjarakat is the pioneer of renovation Islamic press in Indonesia.Pioneering of Pedoman Masjarakat lies in the ability of the magazine serves as amedia that is able to face another ideologys not only Islam ideology.
