ABSTRACT
This thesis is about the negotiation of perantau Minangkabau from Agam
Regency, who were born and grew up in Jakarta as a second generation, on their
identity as Minangkabau people. Their identity as a Minangkabau person is
affected by the interrelationship between the background of their parents who are
still inducing Minangkabau culture that they brought from Sumatera Barat and the
social factors in Jakarta as a cosmopolitan city. The social negotiation of the
second generation of perantau Minangkabau is not only through the hibridity in
Jakarta, but also created a new identity of cultural hibridity of Minangkabau in
Jakarta itself. This can be observed in the matrimonial custom which is influenced
by many factors such as environment and financial issues. The restrictiveness in
doing the same traditional ritual procession in Sumatera Barat is due to the
differences in the pattern of society and the environmental concern.;This thesis is about the negotiation of perantau Minangkabau from Agam
