Daerah Istimewa Yogyakarta adalah sebuah daerah yang mempunyai kedudukan spesial di mata masyarakat Indonesia. Pemerintahan daerah Yogyakarta bisa dikatakan bersifat monarki karena masyarakat masih berpegang teguh pada prinsip pemerintahan kesultanan. Kondisi pemerintahan ini tidak sesuai dengan prinsip demokrasi dengan pemilihan langsung. Pemerintahan masa Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono mengusulkan untuk melakukan pemilihan langsung pada daerah Yogyakarta melalui rancangan undang-undang. Hal ini menuai kontroversi karena masyarakat Yogyakarta merasa nyaman dan demokratis mengunakan sistem kesultanan. Kontroversi ini kemudian diproduksi oleh Koran Kompas yang memposisikan beritanya sebagai pro-masyarakat Yogyakarta melalui pemberitaan pembentukan rancangan undang-undang kesitimewaan daerah Yogyakarta.

ABSTRACT

Yogyakarta is a region that has special position in the eyes of Indonesian people. Monarchy is political system choosen by people because they still believe in their King as they believe in imperial political system. This condition somehow is not in accordance with the priciple of democracy with direct election. Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono's government proposes to conduct direct elections in Yogyakarta. in the other way people of Yogyakarta stands to Monarchy which is lead to a controversy between national government and people of Yogyakarta.
