Istilah "gothic" telah ada sejak abad ke-4 setelah Masehi sebagai nama sebuah suku barbar di daerah Eropa Timur. Arti dari kata ?gothic? kemudian berkembang menjadi gaya arsitektur, aliran sastra, fashion dan genre musik seiring dengan perkembangan zaman. Kesemua aspek tersebut membentuk gothic sebagai budaya yang anti-mainstream. Perkembangan arti kata ?gothic? ini kemudian menimbulkan banyak representasi yang berbeda-beda dari setiap individu yang mengikuti budaya tersebut. Skripsi ini membahas representasi budaya gothic yang ditampilkan oleh grup musik gothic asal Jerman, Blutengel, melalui album mereka yang berjudul Monument.

The term "Gothic" has been around since 4th century A.D as the name of a tribe of the barbarian, that lived in Eastern Europe. The meaning of the word "gothic" was later developed into a style of architecture, literature genre, fashion and music genre along with the development of the times. All these aspects made gothic as an anti-mainstream culture. The development of the meaning of the word "gothic" later made many different representations from every individual that follows the culture. This thesis discusses about the representation of Gothic culture that displayed by a gothic music group from Germany, Blutengel, through their album entitled "Monument".
