Material kayu merupakan salah satu bahan yang biasa digunakan dalam elemen desain arsitektur maupun interior. Material kayu dimanfaatkan oleh para desainer karena mempunyai karakteristik khas berupa warna, serat/motif, ataupun tekstur. Dewasa ini, kayu asli semakin mahal serta mempunyai kelemahan dalam beberapa aspek teknis meliputi konstruksi dan perawatan yang menyebabkan penggunaan material kayu asli semakin berkurang. Sejalan dengan berkembangnya teknologi, diciptakan material imitasi untuk dapat menduplikasi material kayu (asli) terutama dalam tampilan visual. Material kayu imitasi diproduksi untuk dapat menghadirkan kualitas kayu asli pada desain arsitektur/interior dengan harga yang lebih murah dibandingkan kayu asli. Perbedaan diantara kedua jenis kayu tersebut memberikan kekurangan serta keunggulan ketika digunakan dalam desain arsitektur/interior. Penggunaan material kayu baik asli maupun imitasi tidak hanya bertujuan untuk mendukung kualitas ruang secara estetika saja, akan tetapi juga dalam rangka memenuhi fungsi dan kebutuhan.
