Teori ideologi Althusser yang telah selalu menginterpelasi individu sebagai subjek kerap dipandang sebagai sebuah pesimisme, hal itu karena subjek dibiarkan tenggelam dalam relasi sosialnya untuk terus melanggengkan kapitalisme. Meskipun demikian, pengertian ideologi yang sangat ekstrim tersebut sebetulnya hanya dapat dipahami secara utuh melalui konsep Althusser sebelumnya, yaitu overdeterminasi, di mana ideologi yang terletak pada dimensi suprastruktur juga dapat mempengaruhi basis. Dengan cara seperti itu maka teori ideologi Althusserian dapat dibaca secara lebih positif, bahwa overdeterminasi memungkinkan untuk menciptakan interpelasi diferensial.

Althusser's theory of ideology that has always interpellated the individual as a subject is often seen as a pessimism, it is because the subject is allowed to settle in social relation to continue perpetuating capitalism. Nonetheless, the notion of extreme ideology was actually only be fully understood through the concept of the previous Althusser's, that is overdetermination, where the ideology that is located on the dimensions of the superstructure can also affect the base. In this way the Althusserian theory of ideology can be read more positively, that overdetermination is possible to create differential interpellation.
