Fokus utama dari studi ini adalah pemaparan konsep Orientalisme Edward Said yang bertentangan dengan depiksi Timur dan Barat dalam film karya Edward Zwick, The Last Samurai (2003). Stereotipe ketimuran dan mistis samurai pada jaman Edo di Jepang bertemu dengan stereotipe bangsa Barat pada film ini. Potret Timur (samurai) dan Barat (pasukan imperial) dalam film in kontradiktif dengan Orientalisme Said yang mengemukakan bahwa bangsa Barat cenderung menggambarkan potret yang salah terhadap bangsa Timur untuk menopang superiotas Barat terhadap Timur.
