Homosexuality has become a common issue nowadays that can be easily encountered in many television shows. This paper examines how the issue of homosexuality is being approached in BBC's Sherlock and its fan-produced fan-fiction. It is interesting that even though the show does not attempt to offer queer representation through its plot lines, there are several queer subtexts that can be found within the show. These queer subtexts work subtly in subverting heteronormative assumptions, and they create recognizable representations of queerness in a form of the show's fan-produced fan-fiction. The show is analyzed using queer theory, and focuses on underlying tone of homoeroticism presented within the episodes between the two main characters Sherlock and John. Meanwhile, the fan-fiction is analyzed by using representation theory (1995) by Stuart Hall. The queer theory (1993) used in this article mainly consists of the definitions and concepts provided by Judith Butler. There are two major points that this paper attempts to make. The first one is to discuss homosexuality subtext represented within several episodes of the show. Sherlock, a detective series, presents several scenes that can be read using queer theory. Secondly, this paper attempts to discuss how fan-produced fan-fiction of BBC's Sherlock is able to approach homosexuality by negotiating the nature of relationship between the two characters mentioned previously.
