Tropicality and identity : Silaban's ideas on Indonesia architecture

([Publisher not identified] , [Date of publication not identified] )

 Abstrak

The 1950's and early 1960's were probably the busiest decades for the first generation Indonesian architects, thanks to Sukarno's Nation Building policy. Therefore F. Silaban, as well as his contemporaries, had enjoyed producing more of his ideas through drawings and designs rather than writings. Among the rare written words made by the first generation of Indonesian architects, F. Silaban actually wrote one (in 1982, 2 years before his death) that stated his ideals and eventually summarized his works in dealing with the issues that had been prevailing since the beginning of the 20th century. F. Silaban's paper entitled "Architectural Idealism and Its Really in Indonesia" in general approached the issue of identity and tropicality as two sides of the same coin. Therefore i find this simple paper, in fact, explaining the wide spans of F. Silaban's designs straightforwadly.
