A lot of different ethnic communities in Lombok have been settled for centuries. A discussion of the self in the local context is often framed in political identity. Meanwhile, a uniqueness of particular cultures no longer have fixed meaning rather than fluid signs. People response to the relation of signified and signifier polysemous as mentioned in gendang beleq. The paper questions the process of signification in the struggle of meaning in Lombok, where the distinctives of representation becomes crucial for lot of the groups. Gendang beleq is a performance in which its identity interrogeted by various groups. The paper shows how new meaning is materialized in traditions.
