ABSTRAK
Institusi kesehatan mental merupakan sarana utama bagi penderita gangguan mental untuk mencapai pemulihan. Tulisan ini mencoba menggali lebih dalam konsep spasial sebuah institusi kesehatan mental dan bagaimana arsitektur ikut bekerja dalam memulihkan pasien. Telaah yang dilakukan terhadap aspek-aspek spasial pemulihan pasien mengarahkan pada adanya aspek yang bersifat kontradiksi. Kontradiksi spasial yang terjadi adalah antara aspek kontrol dan fleksibilitas. Aspek kontrol hadir merespon pentingnya observasi pasien. Aspek fleksibilitas hadir merespon kebutuhan adaptasi dalam interaksi dengan orang lain. Kedua aspek tersebut memiliki fungsi masing-masing yang dibutuhkan dalam mencapai tujuan yang sama yaitu pemulihan sehingga tidak dapat dihilangkan salah satunya. Negosiasi kedua aspek tersebut merespon perbedaan kebutuhan spasial ruang-ruang di institusi kesehatan mental. Negosiasi kedua aspek tersebut hadir melalui pembatas ruang yang ada pada ruang-ruang pemulihan. Pembatas ruang pada ruang pemulihan memiliki sifat both-and dan double functioning sebagai bentuk negosiasi kontradiksi yang terjadi.

ABSTRAK
A psychiatric ward is the main infrastructure for mental health patients to get recovered. This undergraduate thesis is questioning about spatial concept which psychiatric wards have and how the architecture was working in health especially in psychiatric wards. Psychiatric wards need to get patients recovered so that patients can go back to their society. The study conducted on the spatial aspects of direct patient recovery on the aspects that are contradictory. Spatial contradiction that can be found in psychiatric wards happens between control and flexibility. Control responds to the importance of patients observation. Flexibility responds to the needs of adaptation between patient and other subject in psychiatric wards. Both aspects have their respective functions required to achieve the same goal of recovery and therefore can not be eliminated one of them. Negotiations between these two aspects are responding to differences in spatial needs of the spaces in a mental health institution. The types of negotiations in recovery rooms are ?both-and? and ?double functioning? based on Venturi?s theory towards contradiction in architecture.
