ABSTRAKPenelitian ini bertujuan untuk menguji perilaku cost stickiness dan pengaruh insentif target laba. Cost stickiness adalah salah satu fenomena asimetri biaya, yaitu peningkatan biaya ketika penjualan meningkat lebih besar dibanding penurunan biaya ketika penjualan menurun. Hal tersebut terjadi karena keputusan yang diambil oleh manajer terhadap penentuan biaya. Manajer cenderung menurunkan biaya lebih kecil ketika penurunan penjualan karena adanya biaya penyesuaian dan ekspektasi manajer terhadap peningkatan penjualan di masa depan. Perilaku cost stickiness juga diperkuat dengan adanya insentif manajer untuk membangun empire building. Namun dengan adanya insentif target laba akan menghilangkan perilaku cost stickiness. Pengujian dilakukan pada 123 perusahaan manufaktur yang terdaftar di BEI tahun 2009-2015. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa secara keseluruhan perusahaan manufaktur di Indonesia terindikasi cost stickiness, namun perusahaan dengan manajer yang memiliki insentif untuk menghindari kerugian dan meningkatkan laba akan menghilangkan sticky cost.

ABSTRACTThis study is aimed to examine the manager cost stickiness behaviour and the effect of earnings target incentive. Cost stickiness is one of the phenomena in asymmetry cost, that the increase in cost when sales increase is greater than the decrease in cost when sales fall. This happens because of the decision taken by managers to determine cost. Managers tend to reduce the cost lower when the sales fall due to the adjustment cost and managers rsquo expectation toward the increase sales in the future. Cost stickiness behaviour is also reinforced by the managers rsquo incentive to build an empire building. But, the earnings target incentive will eliminate the cost stickiness behaviour. This test is conducted on 123 manufacture companies listed in BEI from 2009 to 2015. The result shows that overall manufacturing companies in Indonesia are indicated with cost stickiness, but companies with managers who have the incentive to avoid losses and increase earnings will eliminate sticky cost.
