 Abstract

Background Hypoxia is a condition where the body does not have enough oxygen, the body will then adapt naturally by producing antioxidant to prevent oxidative stress. Hypobaric hypoxia is basically a hypoxia condition experienced in high altitude, commonly during flight. As a main organ that supplies oxygen for the body, researcher believed that lungs would have a certain role in this condition. Therefore, this research will focus on the effect reduced glutathione GSH as the non enzymatic antioxidant in intermittent hypobaric hypoxia condition in the lungs. Methods Lungs samples were collected from 150 200 g of rats that had been frozen and exposed to hypoxia hypobaric intermittent conditions. GSH level was then measured by the extracts of the rats. Results Compared to control variable, glutathione level was decreased in hypoxia 1x, 2x, 3x, 4x treatment, and are significant between the control ndash hypoxia 3, control ndash hypoxia 4, hypoxia 1 ndash hypoxia 3 and hypoxia 1 ndash hypoxia 4. Conclusion Intermittent hypobaric hypoxia affects glutathione level in lungs tissues. Key words Glutathione, Oxidative Stress, Intermittent Hypobaric Hypoxia, Lungs Tissue Cells.
