Asam azelat adalah obat anti jerawat yang bekerja dengan cara menghambat enzim thioredoxin reduktase dari Propionibacterium acnes P.acnes yang mempengaruhi penghambatan sintesis DNA bakteri yang terjadi di sitoplasma. Untuk dapat menjalankan aksinya, asam azelat harus menembus melalui stratum korneum ke jaringan sebasea dan masuk ke sitoplasma bakteri dengan melewati peptidoglikan P. acnes yang tebal. Dengan demikian asam azelat perlu diformulasikan dalam vesikel lipid bilayer seperti etosom. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode hidrasi lapisan tipis untuk membentuk suspensi etosomal dengan variasi konsentrasi etanol 30 , 35 dan 40 . Aktivitas antibakteri dilakukan dengan metode difusi cair untuk menentukan Konsentrasi Hambat Minimum KHM dan Konsentrasi Bunuh Minimum KBM . Aktivitas krim etosom asam azelat dibandingkan dengan krim Z. Etosom asam azelat dengan etanol 35 memberikan hasil terbaik dengan efisiensi penjerapan EE sebesar 94,48 0,14 . Aktivitas antibakteri terhadap P. acnes menunjukkan bahwa krim etosom asam azelat memberikan aktivitas lebih baik daripada krim Z. Nilai KHM dan KBM krim etosom asam azelat adalah 250 ?g/ml sedangkan krim Z memiliki KHM 250 ?g/ml dan KBM 500 ?g/ml.

Azelaic acid is an anti acne drug by inhibiting thioredoxin reductase enzyme of Propionibacterium acnes P.acnes that affects the inhibition of bacterial DNA synthesis which occurs in the cytoplasm. So, azelaic acid must be penetrate through the stratum corneum to the sebaceous tissue and into the cytoplasm by passing through the thick peptydoglican of P. acnes. Thus, it is necessary to increase the penetration of azelaic acid that formulated based ethosome. This study using thin layer hydration method to form an ethosomal suspension with variations concentration ethanol 30 , 35 and 40 . Antibacterial activity were conducted using broth dilution method to determine Minimum Inhibitory Concentration MIC and Minimum Bactericidal Concentration MBC . The antibacterial activity of azelaic acid based ethosome were compared with the Z cream. Azelaic acid ethosome with 35 ethanol has given best result with Entrapment Efficiency EE of 94.48 0.14 . Antibacterial activity to P. acnes shown that the azelaic acid cream based ethosome given better activity than Z cream. The value of MIC and MBC of azelaic acid cream based ethosome was 250 g ml while the Z cream were shown MIC of 250 g ml and MBC of 500 g ml. This study proved that the azelaic acid cream based ethosome given better antibacterial activity.
