Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis pengaruh dari pergerakan nilai tukar terhadap employment (penggunaan tenaga kerja) di perusahaan-perusahaan manufaktur Indonesia. Dengan data level perusahaan pada periode antara 2008 hingga 2014, hasil estimasi menggunakan metode GMM menunjukkan bahwa nilai tukar bisa mempengaruhi penggunaan tenaga kerja melalui saluran pendapatan (yaitu, ekspor) dan saluran biaya (yaitu, input yang diimpor). Apresiasi nilai tukar riil efektif memiliki efek negatif pada penggunaan tenaga kerja melalui saluran pendapatan, tetapi memiliki efek positif melalui saluran biaya. Namun, Uji Wald menunjukkan efek bersih yang tidak berbeda secara statistik dari nol. Sehingga, secara rata-rata, perubahan nilai tukar baik apresiasi maupun depresiasi selama periode penelitian tidak berpengaruh signifikan terhadap penggunaan tenaga kerja perusahaan-perusahan manufaktur di Indonesia.

The objective of this study is to examine the effect of exchange rate movement on Indonesian manufacturing firms employment. Using firm-level dataset for the period between 2008 and 2014, the GMM estimation results show that the exchange rate affects employment through revenue (i.e., export) and cost channels (i.e., imported inputs). An appreciation of the real effective exchange rates has a negative effect on employment through the revenue channel, but has a positive effect through the cost channel. However, the Wald Test indicates the net effect is not statistically different from zero, implying that any changes in the real effective exchange rate do not cause any changes in the firms employment.
