ABSTRAK
Salah satu dari lima aspek mendasar dari sebuah kota yang layak huni yang mempengaruhi kualitas hidup adalah ruang publik yang bersemangat (Livable City, n.d.) karena ruang publik tersebut memegang peran penting dalam mengakomodasi interaksi antar strangers (Lofland, 1973). Sebuah ruang publik bisa dikatakan sebagai ruang publik yang berhasil atau sociable salah satunya diindikasikan dengan adanya interaksi (Rad & Ngah 2013), dan interaksi yang bermakna antar strangers ini menjadi sangat berpengaruh terhadap pembentukan komunitas dan kohesi sosial. Fourth places merupakan salah satu contoh ruang publik yang memiliki potensi untuk menimbulkan interaksi antar strangers (Aelbrecht, 2016). Untuk mencapai interaksi antar strangers yang bermakna, perlu dipertimbangkan elemen spasial serta fitur fisik dalam proses desainnya. Salah satu fitur fisik dari ruang publik yang sociable tersebut adalah peluang fisik untuk duduk, berhenti dan berpikir bagi orang-orang yang singgah di dalamnya (Rad & Ngah 2013). Skripsi ini bermaksud untuk melihat peran yang dimiliki oleh fitur fisik ruang publik pada interaksi antara orang yang saling tidak mengenali satu sama lain dalam konteks fourth place. Observasi yang dilakukan menunjukkan bahwa interaksi antar strangers tidak semata-mata terjadi karena adanya peluang fisik untuk duduk, berhenti dan berpikir, namun, yang juga perlu diperhatikan dari fitur fisik tersebut adalah konfigurasi ruang dan bagaimana pengaruhnya terhadap perilaku masing-masing subjek serta relasi sosial yang mungkin muncul.

ABSTRACT
One of the five fundamental aspects of a livable city that affects the quality of life is a vibrant public space (Livable City, n.d.) because public space plays an important role in accommodating interactions between strangers (Lofland, 1973). A public space can be said to be a successful or sociable public space, one of which is indicated by the existence of interactions (Rad & Ngah 2013), and these meaningful interaction between strangers are very influential on community building and social cohesion. Fourth places are one example of a public space that has the potential to induce interactions between strangers (Aelbrecht, 2016). To achieve meaningful interaction between strangers, we need to consider the spatial elements and physical features in designing the space. One of the physical features of a sociable public space is the physical opportunity to sit, pause and think for the people who are in it (Rad & Ngah 2013). This thesis intends to see the role of the public spaces physical features on the interaction between strangers in the context of a fourth place. The conducted observation indicate that the interaction between strangers is not solely due to the physical opportunity to sit, pause and think, however, what also needs to be considered from the physical features is the configuration of space and how it affects the behavior of each subject and social relations that might appear.
