constraint).
ABSTRACTThis study discusses the contextual value of ephemeral architecture. Ephemeral architecture positioned as a concept that can explain the dynamism between the built environment and architectural space. The research question is how architectural space can appear dan disappear in an incompatible built environment. The question emphasizes on: 1) first, the connectedness between the particular condition of the built environment and architectural space that appear-disappear inside it; 2) second, the appear-disappear process of architectural space in the built environment, along with various components that involved in the process. Using Straussian grounded theory approach, and morphogenesis and assemblage as a theoretical lens, this study investigates the occurrence of a cluster of trader space in
Sunda Kelapa mosque courtyard. This study proposed in-compatibility as the central concept to explain the ephemerality of architectural space that occurs in a certain built environment. In-compatibility is compatibility between the built environment and architectural space that occurs in a particular time frame. Architectural space becomes ephemeral because of the compatibility that allows the space to occur in the built environment only happen temporarily. In-compatibility consists of two parts that closely connected each other, which is: potential circumstance and spatial assemblage. Potential circumstance is a particular condition of a built environment that occur through the intersection between several layers of conditioning. Spatial assemblage is an assembly-disassembly process of architectural space that performed based on the potential circumstance. The core that links the potential circumstance and spatial assemblage within the concept of in-compatibility is the availability of resources and constraint.
