Persoalan hidup yang dialami oleh orang Betawi berkaitan dengan sosial budaya yang terjadi di dalam masyarakat Betawi. Perilaku, sikap, dan sifat orang Betawi merupakan dampak dari perkembangan yang terjadi di lingkungan orang Betawi. Salah satu karya sastra yang dominan membahas seputar kehidupan masyarakat Betawi adalah kumpulan cerpen Terang Bulan Terang di Kali karya S.M. Ardan. Dalam kumpulan cerpen tersebut, sembilan cerpen penulis gunakan sebagai data. Dengan memeriksa cerpen-cerpen tersebut, penulis memaparkan bagaimana gambaran masyarakat Betawi yang meliputi sosial budaya Betawi. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode deskriptif analisis, yaitu mendeskripsikan fakta-fakta serta kutipan sebagai bukti. Pendekatan unsur instrinsik, seperti tema, tokoh, penokohan, alur, dan latar dapat menunjukkan gambaran mengenai masyarakat Betawi. Setelah itu, tinjauan sosiologi sastra dapat mengungkapkan sosial budaya Betawi yang terjadi dalam cerpen-cerpen tersebut. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa persoalan hidup yang dialami masyarakat Betawi sangat dominan. Secara keseluruhan, kumpulan cerpen ini menggambarkan kehidupan orang Betawi yang menderita. Penderitaan tersebut dilalui orang Betawi dengan sifatnya yang humoris dan tetap hidup dengan nilai-nilai agama Islam.

The problems faced by the Betawi people are related to the socio-culture that occurs in the Betawi community. The behavior, attitude, and nature of the Betawi people are the impact of developments taking place in the Betawi environment.  One of the dominant literary works on the life of the Betawi is a collection of short stories, Terang Bulan Terang di Kali by S.M. Ardan.  In that collection of short stories, nine short stories  are used as author data. In assessing this short stories, the author describes how the description of the Betawi community is included in the Betawi socioculture. This research uses a descriptive analysis method, which presents facts and citations as evidence. Choices by intrinsic elements, such as themes, character, characterizations, plot and settings can show a picture of the Betawi community. After that, the sociology of the literature discussed can reveal the Betawi social culture that occurs in this short stories. The results showed that the life problems experienced by the Betawi community were very dominant.  Overall, this collection of short stories illustrates the lives of people suffering from Betawi. The suffering is transmitted by the Betawi with funny characters and still lives with Islamic values.
