Syair dapat dikatakan sebagai salah satu jenis puisi lama Melayu. Syair dikenal sebagai media untuk mengungkapkan isi hati seseorang tentang suatu peristiwa di masa tertentu. Berdasarkan hal tersebut, penulis memilih Syair Singapura Terbakar yang telah dibukukan oleh Sweeney (2006) sebagai objek penelitian. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk menjelaskan proses interaksi sosial masyarakat Singapura tahun 1800-an dalam Syair Singapura Terbakar. Penulis menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif dengan pendekatan studi pustaka untuk menganalisis teks syair tersebut. Metode tersebut bertujuan untuk memberi gambaran secara cermat mengenai individu atau kelompok tertentu tentang keadaan dan gejala yang terjadi di dalam teks syair. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa dalam Syair Singapura Terbakar terdapat dua jenis proses interaksi sosial, yaitu asosiatif dan disosiatif. Dalam proses asosiatif, terdapat tiga bentuk proses interaksi sosial, yaitu kerja sama, akomodasi, dan asimilasi. Sementara itu, dalam proses disosiatif, hanya ditemukan satu bentuk proses interaksi sosial, yakni pertentangan (konflik).

Syair is the one of the oldest types of Malay poetry. It is known as a medium to express one's heart about an events at a certain time. Based on this, the authors chose Syair Singapura Terbakar which was recorded by Sweeney (2006) as the object of research. The purpose of this study is to explain the process of social interaction among Singaporeans in the 1800s in Syair Singapura Terbakar. The author uses a qualitative descriptive method with a literature study approach to analyze the text of the poem. This method aims to describe certain individuals or groups carefully about the conditions and symptoms that occur in the poetry text. The results showed that in Syair Singapura Terbakar there are two types of social interaction processes, namely associative and dissociative. In associative, there are three forms of the social interaction process, including cooperation, accommodation, and assimilation. In dissociative, only one form of social interaction process is found, namely conflict.
