Strategies in Understanding Passive Sentences in English Scientific Text a Case Study of IPB Students of Strata OneThis study focuses on students strategies in under-standing passive sentences in English scientific texts. The objective of this study is to identify students' problems which they have experienced and strategies which are used by successful students and unsuccessful students in understanding passive sentences.
Data are obtained using questionaires on problems and strategies of the successful students and unsuccessful students. The data obtained are analized qualitatively using percentage on categorial analysis to get levels of student's problems and strategies. The data are also analyzed quantitatively using statistics analysis with Chi Square Test to get a description of the correlation between students' problems and strategies.
This research finds out a description of four students problems (problems in understanding function and role, in understanding sentences, in understanding vocabularies, and in understanding key words), five student's strategies (strategies in analizing sentence, in using main idea, in understanding vocabulary, in using key words, and in guessing), and the correlation between problems and strategies of successful and unsuccessful students. This study also results in a description of problem levels, strategy levels, and correlation between problems and strategies in passive sentences with agent, without agent (agentless), and stative sentences.
