Masih tingginya angka kematian bayi dan kematian maternal, hal ini mencerminkan masih kurangnya kemampuan negara dalam memberikan pelayanan kesehatan pada masyarakat khusunya perawatan kehamilan serta proses pertolongan persalinan dan neonatal. Kabupaten Sumedang sudah mempunyai 243 bidan diantara 269 desa, dengan kenyataan tingginya angka kunjungan pemeriksaan kehamilan oleh bidan, tidak disertai dengan pemanfaatan tenaga bidan sebagai penolong persalinan. Tujuan penelitian ini untuk mendapatkan tentang gambaran pengetahuan, sikap dan karakteristik sosio demografi ibu dalam pemanfaatan pertolongan persalinan oleh dukun atau bidan serta alasan-alasan yang melatarbelakangi pemanfaatan penolong persalinan di Kabupaten Sumedang. Metode penelitian ini dilakukan dengan pendekatan metode kualitatif dengan fokus group diskusi, karena ingin diperoleh informasi yang lebih dalam dan rinci. Kegiatan analisis data yang dilakukan berupa analisa isi I content analysis. Infoman pada penelitian ini adalah ibu yang melahirkan anak terakhir pada kurun waktu antara bulan Januari 1997 sampai dengan bulan Juni 1997 yang menggunakan jasa pelayanan dukun, bidan serta dukun bersama bidan. Dari hasil penelitian dapat disimpulkan bahwa : 1) Pengetahuan informan tentang hal yang berkaitan dengan persalinan dan penolong persalinan cenderung baik 2) Sikap informan cenderung positif terhadap bidan, ini terlihat dari tingginya kunjungan pemeriksaan kesehatan kehamilan 3) Umur informan berisiko tidak selalu memilih bidan sebagai tenaga penolong persalinan, bahkan ada kecenderungan memilih dukun 4) Informan paritas berisiko tidak selalu memilih bidan sebagai tenaga penolong persalinan 5) Pendidikan informan yang relatif tinggi ada kecenderungan tidak memanfatkan dukun sebagai tenaga penolong persalinan 6) Penghasilan keluarga informan yang lebih baik ada kecenderungan mernilih bidan sebagai tenaga penolong persalinan 7) Persepsi informan tentang jarak menyatakan dekat bila masih satu desa dengan tenaga penolong persalinan 8) Pengambilan keputusan dalam pemilihan tenaga penolong persalinan masih dipengaruhi oleh orangtua, mertua atau suami. Mengingat pengambilan keputusan pemanfatan tenaga penolong persalinan masih dipengaruhi oleh orangtua atau mertua maka diperlukan KIE (Komunikasi, Informasi, Edukasi ) bagi tokoh masyarakat, tokoh agama dari para orangtua serta para suami dari ibu yang sedang hamil atau pasangan usia subur.

The death-rate of baby and maternal mortality are still high, it indicates the state ability in giving the medical services to the people is still submissive : especially in taking care of pregnancy and the process of birth-rate and neonatal. The regency of Sumedang has 243 midwives in 269 villages in fact that the inspection rate of pregnancy by midwives not involving the using of midwives abilities in the process of birth.

The objective of this research are to get the illustration of skill, behavior and sosiodemografy of mother in using of birth process aid by tradisional or obstretical midwives and also the background reason of the midwives utilization.

Ths method of research is accomplished by the approximation of qualitative method and foccused in group discussion to get more detailed information. The activity of data analysis is accomplished by using the form of content analysis. In this research, the informans are mother who bore the last baby in January 1997 until June 1997 and use the services of traditional midwives, obstretical midwives or both of them.

From this research, the conclusions are : 1) The skill informans of birth process and the personal who help the birth process are good enough. 2) The informans behaviour of midwives is good enough. It is indicaated the maximum inspection rate of pregnancy to the people. 3) The age of risky mothers do not always choose the obstretical midwives to help the bird process but they prefer using the traditional midwives services. 4) The risky paritas mother do not always choose the obstretical midwives to help the bird process.5) The education level respondents that high relatively has tendency to use obstretical midwives.6) A mother coming from the family with the better income ho s a tendency to choose the obstretical midwives to help the bird process.7) Mother has a perception of the distance, it indicates close if the midwives stay in the same village.8) The taking of decision to choose the man who help the birth process is still influenced by the parents and parents in law.

Deciding that taking decision in using the skillful personal to help the birth process is still influenced by the parents and parents in law so it important to involve KIE to the mayor figure in community, the mayor figure of religion society, the parent and husband of pregnant wife or fertilized couples.
