Novel Khotbah di Alas Bukit karya Kuntowijoyo merupakan 'teks tasawuf puitik' dalam terminologi Braginsky. Novel ini pada mulanya--ketika terbit sebagai cerita bersambung pada Kompas tahun 1970-an-mengundang kontroversi pro dan kontra. Kontroversi itu terjadi tidak hanya pada pembaca awam, tetapi juga pada para kritikus.Novel ini memang harus dipandang sebagai allegori dari gagasan tasawuf. Peristiwa demi peristiwa bukan hanya merupakan `realitas fiktif, tetapi sebagai penanda dari gagasan tasawuf. Bahkan keseluruhan novel ini merupakan simbol-simbol dari ajaran tasawuf. Tidak mengherrankan kalau novel ini dipandang sebagai karya allegoris.Sebagai sebuah 'teks tasawuf puitik' novel ini menyajikan gagasan tasawuf secara sublim. Artinya, deskripsi gagasan tasawuf di dalamnya diekspresikan dalam bentuk simbol-simbol. Simbol-simbol tersebut berada pada tataran gagasan, peristiwa, tokoh dan latar.Di dalam tesis ini ditelusuri bagaimana gagasan tasawuf itu dieskpresikan dalam bentuk struktur novel. Dari penelitian diperoleh simpulan ternyata struktur novel ini sangat mendukung penyampaian gagasan tasawuf tersebut. Selain itu, tesis ini juga berusaha mendeskripsikan gagasan-gagasan tasawuf yang terdapat di dalamnya.Penelitian ini menitikbera tkan pada analisis aspek sintaksis dan analisis aspek semantik novel ini Analisis aspek sintaksis mendeskripsikan alur dan pengalurannya. Sedangkan deskripsi tokoh dan latar diperoleh melalui analisis aspek semantik. Untuk mendeskripsikan gagasan novel ini diperoleh melalui analisis hubungan intertekstual dengan teks tasawuf dan teks mistisisme Tao.
