Pramoedya Ananta Toer rewrote the tragic story of Ki Ageng Mangir into aply in 1976 while he was imprisoned in Buru Island and finally saw its publication, entitled Mangir, in 2000. This work owes its importance to pramudya's ability to use the framework of the story to expose the similarities between the Mataram era and the new order era,particularly their manipulations of power. In the traditional story, the tragig hero, Ki Ageng Mangir, is betrayed by his wife and killed by his father-in-law Panembahan Senopati, but Pramoedya reconstructured these myths in a series of "corrections" that move the story closer into history. These"corrections are deconstruction of traditional Javanese symbolisms . This paper explains and explores the historical paradigm that Pramoedya Ananta Toer employs in his rewriting of the story.
