This thesis examines the impact of Special Economic Zones (SEZs) as a place-based policy for local economic development in Indonesia. Using difference-in-differences (DID) approach, the study analyses the impact of SEZs on key economic indicators such as GDP per capita, employment, labour wages, and income inequality at the city level. The findings indicate that establishing SEZs leads to increased GDP per capita, employment, and labour wages while reducing income inequality in the treated cities compared to the control cities. The research contributes to understanding place-based policies in developing countries, thereby filling the gap in empirical evidence.
