Penelitian ini membahas 3 masalah yaitu mengenai keistimewaan Daerah Istimewa Yogyakarta,  hak politik perempuan dan suksesi kepemimpinan di provinsi DIY pasca putusan Mahkamah Konstitusi tentang uji materi terhadap Undang-Undang Keistimewaan Daerah Istimewa Yogyakarta. Jenis penelitian yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah penelitian hukum normatif. Penelitian ini menyimpulkan bahwa salah satu keistimewaan Daerah Istimewa Yogyakarta adalah tentang pengisian jabatan Gubenur dan Wakil Gubenur. Sultan Keraton Yogyakarta akan secara otomatis menjadi Gubernur dan Adipati Paku Alam akan menjadi Wakil Gubernur. Penghapusan frasa istri dalam Pasal 18 ayat (1) huruf m UUKDIY memberikan peluang bagi perempuan untuk menjadi Gubernur di provinsi DIY. Walaupun kepemimpinan perempuan masih mendapatkan pertentangan dari banyak pihak dikarenakan nilai-nilai yang hidup dalam Keraton. Sultan sebagai pemimpin Keraton memiliki wewenang penuh untuk menunjuk penerus tahtanya. Sebagai daerah istimewa, Keraton memiliki hak untuk mengajukan siapa saja menjadi Gubernur sepanjang ia adalah pemimpin Keraton yang sah. Negara akan menetapkan Gubernur yang diajukan oleh Keraton.
