Artikel ini membahas masalah konsumerisme dalam prosa kisah "Les deux voisins" pada Contes populaires karya Paul Steven. Dongeng ini mengisahkan perbedaan gaya hidup antara dua tetangga yaitu keluarga Monsieur Pierre dan keluarga Monsieur Jean-Baptiste. Kehidupan keluarga Monsieur Jean-Baptiste digambarkan sebagai keluarga yang sederhana sedangkan keluarga Monsieur Pierre justru menyukai kehidupan glamor. Untuk melakukan analisis, peneliti akan menggunakan teori naratologi struktural Greimas (1982) serta hiperrealitas dan masyarakat konsumsi oleh Jean Baudrillard (2004). Hasil analisis struktur naratif teks menunjukkan bahwa alur cerita digerakkan oleh kesulitan Monsieur Pierre untuk mengatur keuangannya. Monsieur Pierre telah mendapat beberapa saran dan mencoba mengikuti saran tersebut, namun keluarganya terutama Madame Pierre tidak mampu mengendalikan gaya hidupnya sehingga Monsieur Pierre pada akhirnya gagal mencapai tujuannya. Kemudian, hasil analisis tematis menunjukkan bahwa tokoh dalam cerpen ini, yaitu keluarga Monsieur Pierre, terjebak dalam hiperrealitas dan masalah konsumerisme yang tidak terkendali sehingga mengakibatkan kehancuran ekonomi.

This article discusses the issue of consumerism depicted in “Les deux voisins” from Contes populaires by Paul Steven. This folktale tells the story of the difference in lifestyle between two neighbors, Monsieur Pierre's family and Monsieur Jean-Baptiste's family. Monsieur Jean-Baptiste's family life is described as a simple family while Monsieur Pierre's family prefers a more glamorous life. To conduct the analysis, the researcher will use Greimas' (1982) structural narratology theory as well as Jean Baudrillard's (2004) concept of hyperreality and consumption society. The results of the analysis of the narrative structure of the text show that the storyline is driven by Monsieur Pierre's difficulty in managing his finances. Monsieur Pierre had received some advice and tried to follow the advice, but his family, especially Madame Pierre, was unable to control her lifestyle so that Monsieur Pierre ultimately failed to achieve his goals. Subsequently, the results of the thematic analysis show that the characters in this prose, Monsieur Pierre's family, are trapped in the hyperreality and the problem of uncontrolled consumerism resulting in economic disturbance.
