Tesis ini membahas tentang kompleksitas identitas tokoh perempuan muslim dalam novel The Writing on My Forehead (2009) dan The Other Americans (2019). Konsep identitas Stuart Hall dipakai untuk melihat identitas tokoh perempuan muslim yang bersifat dinamis dan tidak kaku dan teori subjektivitas feminis Simone de Beauvoir dipakai untuk melihat usaha perempuan untuk keluar dari konstruksi gender. Hasil analisis memperlihatkan bahwa identitas perempuan muslim sangat kompleks. Kompleksitas identitas muncul akibat persilangan dari beberapa identitas yang melekat pada diri tokoh perempuan muslim, yaitu identitas agama, gender, dan diaspora. Konsekuensi dari ketiga identitas yang saling bersilangan yang ada pada diri tokoh sama-sama memosisikan tokoh utama sebagai liyan (the Other). Lebih lanjut, kedua novel mengonstruski identitas baru perempuan muslim dalam ruang ketiga (third space) sebagai identitas hibrid yang tetap mempertahankan nilai-nilai Islam tanpa menegasikan nilai-nilai liberal Amerika. Selain itu, kedua novel juga menghadirkan perempuan muslim yang mempunyai subjektivitas kuat dan mempunyai kesadaran diri atas posisinya sebagai warga negara Amerika yang mempunyai suara dan hak yang sama.

This thesis discusses the complexities identity of Muslim women in the novels The Writing on My Forehead (2009) and The Other Americans (2019). Stuart Hall's concept of identity is used to see the identity of Muslim women which is dynamic and versatile, Simone de Beauvoir's feminist subjectivity theory is used to see women's efforts to get out of gender construction. The results of the analysis show that the identity of Muslim women is very complex. The complexity of identity arises due to the crossing of several identities attached to Muslim female figures, namely religious, gender, and diaspora identities. The consequences of the three intersecting identities within the main characters placed both of them as the Other. Furthermore, the two novels construct a new identity for Muslim women in the third space as a hybrid identity that maintains Islamic values ​​without negating American liberal values. In addition, the two novels also present Muslim women who have strong subjectivity and have self-awareness of their position as American citizens who have the same voice and rights.
