Penelitian ini menganalisis novel Three Daughters of Eve karya Elif Shafak melalui perspektif gender. Isu utama yang diangkat dalam penelitian ini adalah subjektivitas tokoh perempuan muslim yang direpresentasikan dalam novel. Untuk menyelidiki masalah penelitian, penelitian ini mengimplementasikan tiga konsep, yakni konsep dialogisme dan polifoni Mikhail Bakhtin; teori sekuen Alain Viala; dan konsep tentang kesetaraan gender dalam Islam menurut Asma Barlas. Kajian ini mengungkapkan bahwa novel ini merepresentasikan skeptisisme terhadap Timur serta dualisme terhadap kesetaraan gender dalam Islam. Perempuan Muslim dalam novel digambarkan sebagai individu yang sebagian besar mandiri, cerdas, dan mampu memosisikan diri sebagai subjek dalam keluarga dan publiknya. Namun, teks tersebut juga menghadirkan lapisan luar yang masih menggambarkan masalah ketidaksetaraan gender sebagaimana ditemukan dalam masyarakat Istanbul. Dengan demikian, teks tersebut tidak hanya menekankan dominasi perspektif Barat, tetapi juga memperdebatkan subjektivitas perempuan Muslim dalam mencapai kesetaraan gender.

This study analyses Elif Shafak’s Three Daughters of Eve from a gender perspective. The primary issue addressed in this study is on the subjectivity of Muslim women characters as represented in the novel. To investigate the problem of the study, this research makes use of three concepts, Mikhail Bakhtin’s dialogism and polyphony; Alain Viala’s theory of sequence; and Asma Barlas’s concept on gender equality in Islam. This study reveals that the novel incorporates scepticism about the East as well as its dualism towards gender equality in Islam. Muslim women are depicted as individuals who are mostly independent, intelligent, and capable of positioning themselves as a subject in their family and public. However, the text also presents an outer layer which still depicts the problem of gender inequality found in the Istanbul society. As a result, the text doesn’t only emphasize the domination of Western perspective, but also the dispute of Muslim women’s subjectivity to achieve gender equality.
