 Abstract

Cirrhosis is defined as an inflammatory condition of the liver that results in the accumulation of fluid within the tissues, a process known as oedema. The management of oedema represents a persistent challenge for medical personnel, who are required to reduce fluid volume as expeditiously as possible while minimizing complications. One of the non-pharmacological interventions that can reduce the degree of oedema is leg elevation, which increases venous return and reduces hydrostatic pressure.  Leg elevation was conducted twice a day, in the morning and at night, for a period of five days. The results demonstrated a notable reduction in the degree of oedema, with grades 2 and 1 observed in the right leg and left leg, respectively, and a normal grade observed in the left leg. This reduction in oedema was further reinforced by the administration of diuretic therapy in the form of furosemide and spironolactone. The findings of this study indicate that the combination of leg elevation intervention and diuretic use is an effective approach for reducing oedema in patients with liver cirrhosis, thereby improving the quality of life of these patients.
