 Abstrak

Myths for indigenous communities hold a significant role in maintaining harmony with the natural environment. Nowadays, indigenous communities are facing environmental degradation in forests due to land conversion into palm plantations. This study aims to describe the function of myths as a resistance to the destruction of indigenous forests due to land conversion into oil palm plantations in the novel Jejak Balak. This research uses descriptive qualitative methods. The research data was analyzed based on ecocriticism and myth theory. The research found that Jejak Balak portrays the environmental degradation of customary forests caused by the conversion into oil palm plantations, including illegal logging, global climate decline, ecosystem damage, forest fires, haze, and natural disasters. Furthermore, the novel describes the belief in the myth of inyiak as a form of resistance against the destruction of the forests. Inyiak, as the ancestral protector of the indigenous land, is believed to have the power to punish and curse those who ruin the forests. In addition, inyiak is also used by the community as a new icon against agrarian conflicts, including environmental damage.
