 Abstract

This dissertation talks about the process of living in a community based on a social relationship between Patron and Client. In the last decade, settlement has only been discussed from a macro perspective which includes regulation, finance, technology, and sustainability. Micro-perspectives such as narrower social relations within the community received less attention. For this reason, this study aims to reveal the process of settling a group of residents in the community as a transactional between related actors. This research asks the question of what and how the phenomenon of living in a community based on patron-client relations is present. To answer this, a qualitative paradigm is used because subjective meanings of the relevant actors are needed. Miss Tjitjih was chosen as the subject of the research because the group has lived for six decades in a social relationship between patrons and clients. This study then found that the two actors are interdependent and maintain group entities even with different perspectives or interests. For this reason, this study proposes a term Dependency Framework of Dwelling which describes the process of living in a community that is in the social relationship of patrons and clients. This study also adds the knowledge of settlement that is based on the theory of settlement according to Doxiadis and Heidegger who consider that not always living in a relationship can free humans from isolation.
