This study examines the type of place attachment in the Ci Liwung riverbank population as a result of relationship between the people's living strategy with river normalization and diversion program in Jakarta's segment of Ci Liwung riverbank. The study area is divided into three classes, namely vulnerable, moderately vulnerable, and invulnerable. This is a qualitative study with descriptive correlative analysis and life-history analysis.
The results show that generally, the more vulnerable the area, the higher the attachment to the neighbourhood will be. Type of attachment found in vulnerable areas is emotional, and in moderately vulnerable and invulnerable areas is either behavioural or cognitive.

"This research identifies characteristics, which are the theme, idetity, functions, and authenticity of some current riverfront developments, mainly focusing in urban area. The Study began with the evolution of an urban riverfront, including understanding how early settlements were established along the river, later forming the town, leading to the present day cities and their inhernt traditional urban culture value. Case studies selected were from South East Asia within Singapore and Sarawak in Malaysia. These example will then be compared with London and Boston, USA. Much attention will be given to paying high respect to the citiescharacter and to acknowledging the historical and cultural background of the city where they are set by scrutinising their characteristics. The conclusion will be systematically analysed on design elements and careful considerations through design planning and sensitive appoaches."

"The present environmental situation is not compatible with our expectations. Pollution, erosion, flood, and drought have hit many parts of the world, and these disaster give us reflections on how serious are the environmental problems that befalls this planet. Mankind has exploited the environment to the utmost without caring about environmental conservation. Moreover, with the population explosion after the 1950s and the dependency of life upon the natural processes, the cultivated land to be inherited by future generations has gradually become increasingly barren and fertile. Efforts are absolutely necessary to check increasing population growth rates, to raise the standard of living for all people and to arouse the awareness of sustainable development policies so that a compatibility between development activities and environment can be achieved.
