"Novel processing and searching tools for the management of new multimedia documents have developed. Multimedia Information Retrieval (MIR) is an organic system made up of Text Retrieval (TR); Visual Retrieval (VR); Video Retrieval (VDR); and Audio Retrieval (AR) systems. So that each type of digital document may be analysed and searched by the elements of language appropriate to its nature, search criteria must be extended. Such an approach is known as the Content Based Information Retrieval (CBIR), and is the core of MIR. This novel content-based concept of information handling needs to be integrated with more traditional semantics. Multimedia Information Retrieval focuses on the tools of processing and searching applicable to the content-based management of new multimedia documents. Translated from Italian by Giles Smith, the book is divided into two parts. Part one discusses MIR and related theories, and puts forward new methodologies; part two reviews various experimental and operating MIR systems, and presents technical and practical conclusions.

Modul Mono Modal Indexing melakukan pengindeksan masing-masing tipe media.

Today, a lot of recorded multimedia data available in digital form such as text, image, audio and video stored in various databases. Multimedia data could be accessed by using search engine such as Google, Yahoo, and Bing. However, the result has not been able to link variety of media into an interrelated concepts. This causes the results of relevance judgement is not optimal. On the other hand, the search enginesuch as Google could only received query type likes text or image. Therefore, we need a mechanism of identifying multimedia data in integrated way (Unified Indexing) and Query Interface that can accept various type of media.
Unified Indexing and Query Interface processes consist of several stages: (1) Establish a testbed as experimental data; (2) Design of Unified Indexing; (3) Implementation; and (4) Test and Evaluation. The design of Unified Indexing comprises of: Mono Modal Indexing Module, Concept Module and Search Module. Mono Modal Indexing Module performs indexing of each type of media. Concept Module conducts giving concept of multimedia data with naming process. Search Module searchs information with various type of multimedia queries (Query Interface). The modules are implemented in the Implementation Stage. Test and evaluation stage built on two scenarios: a system that is not use Unified Indexing and system that use Unified Indexing
The results showed that by using the Unified Indexing, multimedia data residing on the same concept provides a better retrieval results:using query by text improve by average is 77%, by image is 60%, by audio is 62% and by video is 60%. Furthermore, the increase of relevant data using query by text is 81%, by image is 85%, by audio is 84% and by video is 85%.

The development in telecommunication technology is so rapidly occurred in this last decade, this development is also followed by computer and broadcasting technological development. These tree technological developments be come so attractive one when those tree technologies directs to the same expansion toward an interactive multimedia technology. These tree technological convergences express multimedia services, that is telecommunication services in voice, text, and graphic formats that would be passed over a media. These technological change results in a change in paradigm with telecommunication business expansion, from vertical business segment that dependent on provider networks to be horizontally segmented.
This change is anticipated by PT. TELKOM by establishing a Multimedia division in the mid of 1997 when economic crisis begun to attack Indonesian economy and other countries in Asia. Growing in this crisis conditions make in surface some constraints for Multimedia Division business expansion, especially related with efforts to finance an investment in sufficient large values.
An evaluation on external environmental factors of the Multimedia Division of PT. TELKOM shows that this division stay on average position in its position to anticipate opportunities and avoid threats which come from their external environments. Meanwhile evaluation result on their internal environmental factor also showed an average number as 2.67. This evaluation output furthermore is analyzed by using SWOT, SPACE (Strategic Position and Action Evaluation) matrix and Internal-Eksternal matrix provides 9 (nine) strategic alternatives.
With using of the Quantitative strategic Planning (QSPM) tool on those 9 (nine) strategic alternatives, therefor the best strategy for implementation is market penetration strategy through increasing marketing effort and promotion of service product. Two other proposed strategies are then market development and vertical integration.
