"Dalam membangun masjid, Islam tidak memiliki aturan mengikat mengenai bentuk masjid karena prinsip utama dalam masjid adalah fungsi (function) (Omer, 2010). Hal tersebut ditunjukan dalam arsitektur Masjid Nabawi (622 M) yang dibangun sederhana sesuai fungsi yang dibutuhkan, tapi di saat yang sama, Masjid Nabawi berperan sebagai ruang publik kota Madinah sehingga masjid sejatinya merupakan tempat beribadah sekaligus pusat komunitas. Namun, perkembangan zaman kemudian mendorong aspek fungsi tidak lagi menjadi hal utama dalam membangun masjid, seperti masjid di era Imperium Ottoman yang menekankan aspek forma. Transformasi tersebut berdampak pada peran masjid menjadi alat birokrasi pemerintah. Fenomena tersebut menunjukan relasi antara aspek fungsi dengan realisasi peran masjid di dalam komunitas muslim yang dipengaruhi oleh praktek kuasa setempat, sehingga arsitektur masjid berpotensi sebagai indikator dalam melihat praktek kuasa. Indonesia di tahun 1950-1965, di bawah pimpinan Sukarno, membangun dua masjid yang signifikan dalam sejarah perkembangan masjid Indonesia, yakni Masjid Istiqlal dan Masjid Salman, yang keduanya menggunakan langgam arsitektur modern yang menekankan aspek fungsi dalam proses perancangannya. Skripsi ini bertujuan untuk melihat bagaimana aspek fungsi dijawantahkan dalam kedua masjid tersebut dan bagaimana hubungannya dengan praktek kuasa Sukarno dan peran masjid sebagai ruang publik."
