"Tulisan ini membahas fenomena tas Hermès di Indonesia dan kaitannya dengan paradigma konsumerisme menurut pemikiran Jean Baudrillard. Konsumerisme sendiri merupakan gejala yang terjadi saat tindakan membeli menjadi sebuah kebutuhan. Gejala ini terjadi dalam masyarakat modern yang tersimulasi oleh media massa hingga pusat perbelanjaan. Masyarakat membeli sebuah objek karena dilandasi oleh nilai tanda dan nilai simbol yang terdapat pada objek tersebut. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif. Tulisan ini menunjukkan bahwa nilai tanda dan nilai simbol yang terdapat pada tas Hermès mempengaruhi keputusan masyarakat Indonesia untuk membeli tas tersebut.
This paper is based on a phenomenon of Hermès bag in Indonesia and its relation to Jean Baudrillard’s concept of consumerism. Consumerism is a phenomenon that occurs when the action of buying becomes a need. This phenomenon happens to the modern society which is simulated by mass media up to shopping centre. People have a tendency to buy a thing based on its sign value and symbol value. This paper shows that the sign value and symbol value of Hermès bag can influence the Indonesian’s decision to buy the bag."
