"This volume contains the lecture notes of the 8th Reasoning Web Summer School 2012, held in Vienna, Austria, in September 2012, in the form of worked out tutorial papers on the various topics that have been covered in that school. The 2012 summer school program had been put together under the general leitmotif of advanced query answering topics for the Web. The idea was to address on the one hand foundations and computational aspects of query answering, in formalisms, methods and technology, and on the other hand to also spotlight some rising or emerging application fields relating to the semantic web in which query answering plays a role, and which by their nature also pose new challenges and problems for this task, linked stream processing, geospatial data, semantic wikis, and argumentation on the web fall in this category."

"This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed post-conference proceedings of the 7th IFIP WG 9.2, 9.6/11.7, 11.4, 11.6 International Summer School, held in Trento, Italy, in September 2011. The 20 revised papers were carefully selected from numerous submissions during two rounds of reviewing. The book also contains two invited talks. The papers are organized in topical sections on privacy metrics and comparison, policies, privacy transparency in the age of cloud computing, privacy for mobile applications, consumer privacy, privacy for online communities, privacy for eHealth and eID applications, privacy attacks and problems, and ethics."

"[Annotation business intelligence (BI) promises an organization the capability of collecting and analyzing internal and external data to generate knowledge and value, providing decision support at the strategic, tactical, and operational levels. Business intelligence is now impacted by the big data phenomena and the evolution of society and users, and needs to take into account high-level semantics, reasoning about unstructured and structured data, and to provide a simplified access and better understanding of diverse BI tools accessible trough mobile devices. In particular, BI applications must cope with additional heterogeneous (often Web-based) sources, e.g., from social networks, blogs, competitors, suppliers, or distributors data, governmental or NGO-based analysis and papers, or from research publications. The lectures held at the First European Business Intelligence Summer School (eBISS), which are presented here in an extended and refined format, cover not only established BI technologies like data warehouses, OLAP query processing, or performance issues, but extend into new aspects that are important in this new environment and for novel applications, e.g., semantic technologies, social network analysis and graphs, services, large-scale management, or collaborative decision making. Combining papers by leading researchers in the field, this volume will equip the reader with the state-of-the-art background necessary for inventing the future of BI., Annotation business intelligence (BI) promises an organization the capability of collecting and analyzing internal and external data to generate knowledge and value, providing decision support at the strategic, tactical, and operational levels. "This book is a collection of lecture notes for the CIME course on "Multiscale and Adaptivity: Modeling, Numerics and Applications," held in Cetraro (Italy), in July 2009. Complex systems arise in several physical, chemical, and biological processes, in which length and time scales may span several orders of magnitude. Traditionally, scientists have focused on methods that are particularly applicable in only one regime, and knowledge of the system on one scale has been transferred to another scale only indirectly. Even with modern computer power, the complexity of such systems precludes their being treated directly with traditional tools, and new mathematical and computational instruments have had to be developed to tackle such problems. The outstanding and internationally renowned lecturers, coming from different areas of Applied Mathematics, have themselves contributed in an essential way to the development of the theory and techniques that constituted the subjects of the courses."
