"ABSTRAKBeragam konflik telah tercatat dalam perjalanan panjang sejarah agama manusia. Dalamkonteks Indonesia juga telah terjadi sederetan konflik yang mengatasnamakan agamasepanjang sejarah kehidupan bernegara. Konflik tersebut tidak hanya terjadi antara pemelukagama yang berbeda, tetapi juga antara pemeluk agama yang sama. Dengan mengikutipemikiran Elizabeth Nottingham mengenai dualisme agama, teori fungsionalisme konflikAlfred Coser, serta meminjam contoh kasus konflik agama dalam artikel John Bowen, sayamencoba menyampaikan empat hal: pertama, konflik dalam kehidupan beragama adalahsuatu keniscayaan; kedua, konflik yang terjadi antara pemeluk agama yang sama disebabkan oleh perbedaan penafsiran dan praktik ritual agama; ketiga, ritual agama tidak hanya memilikiaspek religius semata, tetapi juga aspek sosial-politik; keempat, konflik keagamaan sejatinyatidak hanya bersifat merusak, tetapi juga memiliki fungsi bagi agama dan masyarakat itusendiri, seperti: memperkuat integrasi suatu kelompok atau komunitas, memotivasi pemelukagama untuk lebih memahami ajaran agamanya, mendorong terbentuknya komunitas ataukelompok yang baru, serta menjaga solidaritas kelompok.ABSTRACTVarious conflicts have been recorded in the long history of human religion. In Indonesiancontext, a series of conflicts in the name of religion taken place throughout the life historyof the state. The religious conflict does not only occur between people of different religions,but also followers of the same religion. Referring to Elizabeth Nottingham's thoughts onreligious dualism, Alfred Coser's conflict functionalism theory, and considering samplecase of religious conflict in John Bowen's article, i tried to convey four things: first, conflictin religious life is inevitable; second, the conflict occurred between followers of the samereligion is caused by differences in the interpretation and practice of religious rituals; third,the religious rituals do not only have religious aspect, but also socio-political aspects;fourth, the religious conflict is not only destructive, but also has functions for religion andsociety itself, such as strengthening the integration of a group or community, motivatingreligious followers to understand their religious teachings better, encouraging the forma-tion of new communities or groups, and maintaining the group solidarity."
